Digital model of the left chondrocranium of a dogfish shark

This is an annotated digital replica of the chondrocranium (left side only) in our Dogfish Shark Skull Active Learning Kit, a modular resource that helps students learn shark skull form and function with hands-on activities. The kit includes both the left and right side but only the left side is included here to show all of foramina and canals on the inside of the chondrocranium. The color coding in this model matches the colors of the 3D printed parts in the kit.

Modeling methodA photogrammetry scan was performed of the dissected skeletal elements 3DAS-ID00002 to obtain most of their outer surface structure. Most of the inner surface structure of the chondrocranium was obtained by segmenting a micro CT scan of 3DAS-ID00003. Additions and refinements were made to the skeletal element models by sculpting. The brain model was sculpted based on the hemisected brain of specimen 3DAS-ID00003 and dissection reference images.
